Kimono Time -- Raph and Maggie

Next in the kimono series. I have mixed feelings about this picture. I was going to do Mikey and Makai first, but then I came up with the idea of Raph pinning Emerald to the tatami mat by her kimono to keep her from scooting off. I thought it would be very funny and a very Raph approach to fatherly responsibilities. So I started to draw. Well, I got everyone's basic pose down, but when I started to add details the tone of the picture took a drastic U-turn.

Instead of Raph looking away innocently, he's avoiding Maggie's eyes from guilt. The mildly irritated look on Maggie's face became a lethal glare; hell even Sapphire is giving him this look of betrayl. Plus he's downing sake like there's no tomorrow. This picture went from a funny snapshot of a mildly dysfuctional family to a portrait of a family on the brink of breakup.

To quote the Professor from Futurama: 'Oh, I made myself sad.'

Artisticly speaking, it's pretty good. The Jewels are all in cotton yukata according to thier specified colors. Raph is in a kimono and matching hakama but I just don't see him messing with the nagujuban and haori unless forced to at gunpoint. Maggie's wearing a Iro-tomesode, a colored formal kimono reserved for married women. I wanted to pattern to reflect her country upbringing, so she gets a golden cockerel and sunflowers.
