Hidden Treasure

Dixie wakes up to a plat eye in her bedroom.

I don't usually draw monsters, so I decided to stretch myself. Constructive crit is most welcome.

First of all, a little background. In the stories, I just say Dixie is a witch and leave it at that. Dixie is actually a geegee. There is a system of belief/superstition/witchcraft indigenous to the American South. It usually gets lumped in with Voodoo, but it's not Voodoo. It's not Santeria. It's a little different from what people think of as 'traditional witchcraft.' If it is separated at all, it's attributed to the Gullah people - descendants of slaves in Georgia and the Carolinas.

But, it's not just a black thing or just a Georgia/Carolina thing. Part of the problem with assigning it a specific name is the fact that this occurs in the Bible Belt - practitioners often identify themselves as Christian and go to church every Sunday and then perform pendulum work or dowsing in the church parking lot and don't think a thing of it.

I'm not even going to get started on snake handlers.

But if you've ever heard the term 'haint' - that person knows exactly what I'm talking about.

Anyway, in this hard-to-define belief system, there exists something called a plat eye. Back in the day, if you wanted to protect a buried treasure, you dug a hole, put the treasure in the hole, then killed an animal like a calf or a pig, and threw it on top of the treasure. The idea was the soul of the animal would protect the treasure and come back as a creature called a plat eye - identified by it's huge, staring orange eyes. This one appears to be mostly pig with a little horse thrown in for good measure.

But what hidden treasure could there be in Dixie's bedroom?
